NY Property Tax Cap Coalition says Senate is right on the tax capAlbany- The State Senate’s passage of the school property tax cap is step toward much-needed reform, according to the New York Property Tax Cap Coalition, representing individuals, businesses and associations across New York State. “New York property tax payers need relief. The tax cap is a vital first step to control spending and stop skyrocketing property tax increases,” said Anita MacDougall a Nassau County Taxpayer and member of Long Islanders for Educational Reform. “The property tax cap offers a real solution to the problems facing New York taxpayers. The alternative of a circuit-breaker simply shifts the tax burden so that spending and taxes would continue to increase at unsustainable levels,” said Todd Shimkus, president & CEO of the Adirondack Chamber of Commerce. “Dramatic times call for dramatic measures. We applaud the Senate's willingness to take the bold step necessary to advance the Tax Cap. We implore our friends in the Assembly to take similar action,” said Al Samuels, president & CEO of the Rockland Business Association. The bill (S.8736) passed by the Senate establishes school property tax cap for all school districts other than the "Big 5" city school districts. The tax cap would limit the annual growth of school property tax levies to 4 percent or 120 percent of the rate of inflation, whichever is less. This is the same proposal introduced by Governor Paterson in June. Contact Information: Al Samuels, 845-735-2100
